A geisha (or geiko in Kyoto) is a highly skilled Japanese female entertainer, an "art person," trained in traditional Japanese arts like dance, music (shamisen), singing, calligraphy, and tea ceremony, known for their elaborate kimono, white makeup, and sophisticated conversation to entertain guests at banquets. They are not prostitutes, but professional artists who dedicate themselves to perfecting traditional culture, with trainees called maiko learning the craft in specialized districts called hanamachi.
